Women's Health
If you think you have bladder or bowel problems or a prolapse ask yourself the following questions:
- Frequently visiting the toilet?
- Suddenly find you have to rush to the toilet?
- Woken at night to go to the toilet?
- Suffer any leakage before you get to the toilet?
- Suffer from leaking urine on coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercising?
- Suffer with constipation or difficulty emptying your bowels?
- Have any urgency with your bowels?
- Have you been told you have a prolapse?
- Suspect you have a prolapse, do you get a heavy, achy sensation down below?
If you answer yes to any of the above questions then physiotherapy can help you.
Any women, young and old suffer from leakage of urine or faeces and assume that nothing can be done about it.
Do not suffer in silence!
There are 3 types of incontinence:
- Stress Incontinence - this is the most common type, when urine leaks during activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing and running.
- Urge Incontinence is when you have a sudden urge to go to the toilet and leak before you get to the toilet. This can also be associated with frequency (going to the toilet more than 8 times in the day and more than once at night).
- Faecal Incontinence is when you leak from your back passage or have difficulty controlling wind.
A prolapse is where the bladder, rectum or womb drops downwards, this can vary in its severity and is due to the lack of support of the muscles and ligaments that hold the organs in place. Some prolapses can be rectified through physiotherapy with pelvic floor re-training and the use of vaginal support aids but severe prolapses may need surgery.
Physiotherapy can help improve symptoms and in a lot of cases completely cure incontinence.
At Friarswood Physiotherapy Clinic we have senior staff who have extensive experience in treating continence problems. An individual assessment is conducted by a female physiotherapist and a personalised treatment programme is then devised.
