Electrotherapy
In addition to the 'hands on' treatments, certain electrotherapy machines may be used to promote tissue repair and give pain relief.
Ultrasound
High frequency sound waves directed over the inflamed site to reduce the swelling and promote healing.
Interferential Therapy
Applying two high frequency currents to the skin which have a difference in intensity that creates a low frequency current within the tissues. The effect of that low frequency is to relieve pain either by blocking the pain afferents or by promoting the release of endorphins.
Curapulse (Pulsed Shortwave Diathermy)
Produces a high frequency current applied via a drum-type electrode which consists of a flat helical metal coil contained in a plastic casing. This treatment is used to improve blood supply and promote tissue healing.
PAM (Power Assisted Micro Manipulation)
The handset incorporates 4 pads operated by four pneumatic pistons, which are synchronised so as to operate in opposing pairs, following the line of the spine. There are three modes of operation: spasm, reflex and mobilisation. Spasm prepares the muscles and commences and ends each treatment, reflex mode stimulates the spinal reflexes - relieving the spine, and mobilisation mode which improves the mobility of the spine by counter-rotating one vertebra on another. With a combination of these modes the aim is to restore elasticity and relieve pain.
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)
A portable system which once the patient is taught how to use can be taken home. It incorporates the same principles as Interferential Therapy but the benefits are that it can be used for longer periods. At Friarswood when appropriate we hire TENS machines and if they prove beneficial they may be purchased from the clinic.
